Stage Mother is a dramedy about a conservative southern church choir director who inherits her late son’s San Francisco drag club. After getting over the shocking news, she appears to win over one by one each of his son’s friends and colleagues by shaking up their habits when they expect it the least.
The movie directed by Thom Fitzgerald and written by Brad Henning has also a surprising cast. Jacki Weaver as Maybelline, the mother, is well known for Animal Kingdom for which she was nominated for the 2011 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She got the same nomination in 2013 for Silver Lining Playbook. Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels and most recently Why Women Kill from creator Marc Cherry) plays Sienna, the son’s best friend and single mom. Adrian Grenier (HBO’s Entourage, The Devil Wears Prada) is Nathan the left broken and alone boyfriend. Mya Taylor is Cherry, one of the club’s performing drag queens. She is best known for the 2015 film Tangerine for which she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female.
The ensemble cast tells us a heart felt story about family and acceptance. A feelgood moment about embracing and celebrating difference through working on the relationships that once were broken. Colourful drag diva singing performances makes you smile all along.
