SUMMARY:BXL UNIVERSEL II : Multipli.city
DESCRIPTION:CENTRALE presents BXL UNIVERSEL II: multipli.city\, a multidisciplinary exhibition & events project in collaboration with 11 artists and 5 Brussels-based organisations. \nIn 2021\, on the occasion of its 15th anniversary\, CENTRALE celebrates its city\, its artists and its inhabitants with the project BXL UNIVERSEL II : multipli.city. \nMore than an exhibition\, this project is a forum-exhibition which takes the form of a patchwork of singularities and paths\, through the proposals of artists who chose to live and work in Brussels– and the collaboration with not-for-profit organisations within the city. Questioning both the strata of cosmopolitan Brussels\, and the co-inhabiting woven into it\, the art centre extends to the public space and partner venues\, opening its space to all for exchange and sharing around artistic and participative processes. \nIn 2016\, CENTRALE presented BXL UNIVERSEL I\, a subjective portrait on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. Whereas the first part of the exhibition started a few weeks after the terrorist attacks of March 2016\, this second part of the trilogy will be marked by the pandemic\, the lockdowns and the impact of the sanitary crisis on (cultural) life. These events both shed new light on our vision of the city and of the world.

SUMMARY:Roger Raveel
DESCRIPTION:In 2021 we celebrate the centenary of Roger Raveel (1921-2013); an ideal moment for BOZAR to organise a large-scale retrospective of his work. Raveel is regarded as one of the most important Belgian painters of the second half of the 20th century\, but his exceptional visual language\, balancing between figuration and abstraction\, often inspired by his immediate surroundings\, set him radically apart from his contemporaries.Through several thematic chapters\, the exhibition traces Raveel’s long artistic journey and the emergence of his unique pictorial vision.

SUMMARY:Microplastics
DESCRIPTION:Magnifying the microscopic\, immersing yourself in this infinitely small and infinitely rich world. Using the example of plankton\, photos taken by the scientists Richard Kirby and Thomais Vlachogianni and by the artist Jean Noviel raise questions about the dangers of microplastics.\nAbsorbing contaminants and chemicals\, these minuscule bits of waste are dispersed in our oceans. Nearly invisible to the naked eye\, the particles are ingested by plankton\, these small aquatic plants and animals at the base of the food chain in the marine environment. The microplastics pose very real risks to our environment and our health.\nThe exhibition was first held in Biarritz\, on the seashore\, and is now travelling up the sewers to Brussels. Until 19 June 2021\, these unique snapshots will raise your awareness.

SUMMARY:It Never Ends - Part 2 : John M Armleder & Guests
DESCRIPTION:From 4 February 2021 onwards\, KANAL–Centre Pompidou will present the second part of the exhibition It Never Ends\, an extensive carte blanche given to John M Armleder. In September 2020 the Swiss artist was invited to fill the six floors of the showroom of the former Citroën garage. The result is a dialogue between a series of large installations\, which he specifically designed for the space and a constellation of exhibitions\, performances\, concerts and meetings\, which will be presented to the public in accordance with health requirements. \nThe second part of It Never Ends continues to explore the world of Armleder. As a solo exhibition which also showcases the work of other artists\, this project reaffirms the ethical and aesthetic dimension of the work of John M Armleder\, who has always thought about art in terms of collaboration\, friendship\, and hospitality. \nPUBLIC SPACE\nThe exhibition takes place in a public space\, open from Thursday to Sunday\, 11:00 to 19:00 with free admission\, occupying the first two levels of the building. Upon entering\, visitors encounter a new installation by the artist\, made out of scaffolding\, plants\, lights and screens\, which connect the ground floor with the first floor where the artist has produced one of his largest Furniture Sculptures in situ. This public space also features an experimental library (designed and produced in collaboration with CIVA – the International Centre for Urbanism\, Architecture and Landscape)\, a temporary printing press offering workshops to the general public\, and a co-working space\, all free of charge. \nIT NEVER ENDS – PART 2\nThe exhibition continues on the four upper levels: each of the industrial floors of the showroom has been filled by Armleder in a different way. As in Part \, different exhibitions are on display\, conceived and staged by the artist himself. These exhibitions include works by guest artists as well as presentations of collections. Alongside some of the installations already shown in Part 1\, visitors will be able to discover a monumental sculpture\, in the form of a golden mushroom\, by Sylvie Fleury (Mushroom Autowave Rich-Gold Petzold silber F14\, from 4 February to 25 April); a spectacular solo exhibition by Swiss-American artist Christian Marclay (from 4 February to 7 March); and the rare presentation of a set of Fluxus boxes from the collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne (MNAM) – Centre Pompidou in Paris\, staged by Armleder himself. \nThe exhibition will also feature the work of Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge (Loyalty Doesn’t End with Death – from 18 March to 25 April)\, who died in March 2020 while working on this exhibition for It Never Ends. The Big Bird exhibition closes the series\, bringing together three painters – Domenico Battista\, Thomas Downing and Olivier Mosset – in an experimental scenography specially designed by Armleder. \nAs in the first part of It Never Ends\, every month\, Armleder will present a selection of artist films inspired by the collections of the MNAM – Centre Pompidou. Visitors will be able to discover the experimental films by Fluxus; an erotic masterpiece from the 1960s by American artist Caroline Schneemann; feminist videos by Hannah Wilke\, an American sculptor\, performer and video artist; and a new work by Swiss artist Philippe Decrauzat. \nA RADIO EXTENSION\nInitially\, Armleder’s project was to be accompanied by a major live programme: concerts\, performances\, screenings\, meetings and workshops\, conceived in dialogue with the artist. Due to the pandemic\, however\, KANAL–Centre Pompidou will not be able to offer this programme as of 4 February. It will be presented to the public as soon as the health situation allows it. The Studio K – A Radio Room project grew out of this situation\, and since 14 January 2021\, has offered different artists\, performers\, musicians\, cultural producers\, collectives and mediators a space for exchange and creation that is accessible\, open and focused on experimentation and reflection\, despite the current health restrictions. From 4 to 7 February\, for the opening of It Never Ends\, Part 2\, Studio K will broadcast live from the showroom during the opening hours of the exhibition\, with interviews\, readings\, creations and archives related to the exhibition conceived by Armleder. \nCURATORSHIP\n– Bernard Blistène\, Director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne / Centre Pompidou\, Curator in Chief\n– Yann Chateigné\, Associate Curator\, KANAL–Centre Pompidou\n– Anna Loporcaro\, Deputy Artistic Director in Charge of Audience Development and Partnerships\, KANAL–Centre Pompidou\n– Guy Gypens\, Head of Performing Arts\, KANAL–Centre Pompidou\n– Jonathan Pouthier\, Conservation Attaché at the Film Collection department of the Musée National d’Art Moderne / Centre Pompidou\, Paris \nINVITED ARTISTS PART 1&2\nDavid Adamo\, Eric Andersen\, Carl Andre\, Ay-O \, Fia Backström\, Domenico Battista\, Bureau Barbier Bouvet\, Massimo Bartolini\, Francis Baudevin\, Lisa Beck\, Giovanna Belossi\, Wallace Berman\, Monica Bonvicini\, Gregory Bourrilly\, Ludovic Bourrily\, George Brecht\, Olaf Breuning\, AA Bronson\, Marcel Broodthaers\, Chris Burden\, John Cale\, Yaima Carrazana\, Valentin Carron\, Maurizio Cattelan\, John Cavanaugh \, Bruce Conner\, Isabelle Cornaro\, Stéphane Dafflon\, Philippe Decrauzat\, David Diao\, Emilie Ding\, Jason Dodge\, Thomas Downing\, Robert Filliou\, Albert Fine\, Sylvie Fleury\, Christian Floquet\, Francesca Gabbiani\, The Genevan Heathen\, Poul Gernes\, John Giorno\, Dan Graham\, Amy Granat\, Piero Golia\, Wade Guyton\, Fabrice Gygi\, Richard Haldrich\, Peter Halley\, Eric Heist\, Geoffrey Hendricks\, Gregor Hildebrandt\, Alice Hutchins\, Ann Veronica Janssens\, Joe Jones\, Peter Kennedy\, Karen Kilimnik\, Scott King\, Stéphane Kropf\, Alix Lambert\, George Landow\, Patrick Lucchini\, Elaine Lustig Cohen\, George Maciunas\, Christian Marclay\, Larry Mantello\, Larry Miller\, Peter Miller\, Simon Moretti\, Olivier Mosset\, Maurizio Nannucci\, Amy O’Neill\, Yoko Ono\, Virginia Overton\, Genesis P-Orridge\, Laurent Pache\, Nam June Paik\, Charlemagne Palestine\, Mai-Thu Perret\, Jeff Perkins\, Jock Reynolds\, James Riddle\, Gerwald Rockenschaub\, Dieter Roth\, Takako Saito\, Paul Sharits\, Mieko Shiomi\, Carolee Schneemann\, Peter Schuyff\, Haim Steinbach\, Rudolf Stingel\, Blair Thurman\, John Tremblay\, Pierre Vadi\, Pieter Vanderbek\, Ben Vautier\, Xavier Veilhan\, Volf Vostell\, Bob Watts\, Lawrence Weiner\, Hannah Wilke\, Parker Williams\, Jordan Wolfson

SUMMARY:Félix Luque Sanchez - 'Verisimilitude'
DESCRIPTION:“VERISIMILITUDE”\, AN EXHIBITION BY FÉLIX LUQUE SÁNCHEZ IN COOPERATION WITH DAMIEN GERNAY AND IÑIGO BILBAO LOPATEGUI. \n“Felix Luque Sánchez (Oviedo\, Spain\, 1976) is an artist whose work explores how humans conceive their relationship with technology and provides spaces for reflection on current issues such as the development of artificial intelligence and automatism. Using electronic and digital systems of representation\, as well as mechatronic sculptures\, generative sound scores\, live data feeds and algorithmic processes\, he creates narratives in which fiction blends with reality\, suggesting possible scenarios of a near future and confronting the viewer with her fears and expectations about what machines can do.”\nText by Pau Waelder

SUMMARY:PhotoBrussels Festival 05
DESCRIPTION:After the success of the 4th edition in 2019 (nearly 8\,000 visitors)\, Hangar launches the 5th edition of PhotoBrussels Festival\, an event dedicated to photography which aims to radiate in the city. \nThe exhibition at Hangar during PhotoBrussels Festival 05 will commemorate the year 2020: 420 artists in Europe responded to the “Call for European Photographers” launched during the lockdown (March-June 2020). A jury has selected twenty-seven laureates that will be presented at Hangar: a photographic mission to remember and an immersive scenography. \nThrough twenty-seven different photographic and/or video sensibilities\, Hangar reveals the seeds of human creative resilience. Each artist presents his or her vision of the “inner world”\, thus shattering the heavy world of the forties. Creativity\, humour\, empathy\, reflection\, love\, inspiration from nature are all principles that promise a quick recovery and a better “after”. \nThe twenty-seven laureates :\nGérome Barry\, Lucile Boiron\, Marguerite Bornhauser\, Ferhat Bouda\, Bruno Boudjelal\, Sarah Bouillaud\, Jean-Marc Caimi & Valentina Piccinni\, Gonçalo Fonseca\, Julia Fullerton-Batten\, Gabriele Galimberti\, Nick Hannes\, Giovanni Hänninen\, Philip Hatcher-Moore\, Pierre Jarlan\, Kíra Krász\, Yann Laubscher\, Lucas Leffler\, Edgar Martins\, Alisa Martynova\, Patrick Messina\, Alice Pallot\, Elea Jeanne Schmitter & Le Massi\, Alexandra Serrano\, Frédéric Stucin\, Mattia Sugamiele\, Simon Vansteenwinckel\, Laure Vasconi. \nThe Jury members :\nGiovanna Calvenzi\, editor & curator (IT)\nChristian Caujolle\, writer\, curator & art critic (FR)\nRodolphe de Spoelberch\, founder of Hangar and collector (BE)\nBruno Devos\, editor & director Stockmans Art Books (BE)\nDelphine Dumont\, director of Hangar & founder of PhotoBrussels Festival (BE)\nGaëlle Gouinguene\, communications & risponsable of cultural projects Leica (FR) \n__ \nOrganised every year by Hangar\, PhotoBrussels Festival is:\n– a large thematic exhibition at Hangar ;\n– a Festival Tour*\, a tour of the town listing all the photo exhibitions of the moment;\n– a programme of events: conferences\, workshops\, guided tours\, book signings\, portfolio readings\, etc..;\n– a publication as a visual archive sold online and in the bookshop. \n* Festival Tour\nPhotoBrussels Festival takes place in different places in Brussels thanks to the Festival Tour and makes Brussels vibrate to the rhythm of photography. The Festival Tour lists all the exhibitions and initiatives related to the photographic medium during the festival period. Equipped with a map of Brussels\, the public is invited to move from one photographic exhibition to another\, in emblematic art venues or less well-known spaces\, of which Hangar is the starting point. \nThis year\, important places such as Bozar\, Botanique\, Wiels\, The Jewish Museum of Belgium\, Contretype\, ADAM Design Museum but also young places such as Geopolis or L’Enfant Sauvage are included.

SUMMARY:Fake for Real
DESCRIPTION:Discover fakes and falsifications throughout history\, from the time of antiquity\, through medieval and modern history until the present era. Fakes have a long tradition in history\, but each era has seen particular types of fakes flourish. Significantly\, the human tendency to believe in certain fakes appears to be universal. \nThe exhibition begins with the ancient practice of removing people from official accounts (

SUMMARY:Embrasez-vous !
DESCRIPTION:The Art et marges musée is celebrating turning 10 – sterling opportunity to present its collection in a new light. Amassed along the rock loads and less travelled paths of art\, the collection is now teaming with gems of outsider art. The museum has opened its doors to ten accomplices – artists. Fascinated by artists from the collection\, they have taken over the premises. They are hell bent on bedazzling through installations\, performances\, sound\, literary and culinary creations. Incandescent\, luminous and mysterious embers\, each point of view sheds new light on the collection\, opening a door onto conflagration. The result is a flamboyant cake to be shared and devoured with abandon.

SUMMARY:Choco Loco
DESCRIPTION:Like the railways\, Belgian chocolate owes its international reputation to the industrial progress of the 19th and 20th centuries. From 20 October 2020 to 21 February 2021\, the Choco Loco exhibition enables you to explore both worlds\, so different and yet so similar. \nThis exquisite cocoa-scented exhibition presents about twenty original chocolate sculptures of railway-related subjects created especially for the exhibition.\nTwo famous Belgian chocolatiers\, Pierre Marcolini and Dominique Persoone\, who were working together for the first time\, are the patrons of this exhibition. These two artists have created an exclusive chocolate bar for the occasion\, called L’Étoile du Nord. This delicacy has been prepared with the best Criollo cocoa beans. These rare white beans have been cultivated in a sustainable and eco-ethical way on the estate of Mathieu Brees\, a Belgian grower based in Mexico. This chocolate bar is exclusively available in the Train World shop.

SUMMARY:Bill Viola | Purification
DESCRIPTION:Purification\, a double projection created for Peter Sellars’ staging of Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde in 2005\, offers a perfect synthesis of all these elements. SUMMARY:Comès. Of Shadow and Silence
DESCRIPTION:Didier Comès is one of the major authors of the Belgian comic strip\, a master of black and white and fantasy. \nHe enjoyed dazzling success in the early 1980s with a graphic novel that left its mark on a whole generation of readers\, Silence. The story of this simple-minded deaf-mute exploited by the landowners of Beausonge and whom a witch will awaken to consciousness\, is intertwined with the character of Comès\, marked by all forms of rejection\, exclusion and violence\, whether rural or urban. \nMaster of silences\, Comès passed away in 2013\, without ever receiving the honours of a major exhibition in Brussels. Thanks to the Comès Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation\, people will be able to discover or rediscover this work of art through exclusively silent boards and a staging designed in harmony with the venue. \nOriginals of Corto Maltese\, the most famous comic strip by Hugo Pratt – a great friend of Comès and a fervent defender of silent boxes – will also be presented\, as will those of an author who has often been presented as the spiritual son of Didier Comès\, Christophe Chabouté. \nThe exhibition is an initiative of the King Baudouin Foundation to promote the artistic heritage of Dider Comès\, as part of the donation of his work by his brothers and sisters\, and is curated by Thierry Bellefroid and Eric Dubois. \nOnline reservation required via the following link: https://www.belvue.be/en/expoComes. \nFree virtual visit available in Dutch\, English and French: https://app.belvue.be/.

SUMMARY:Aleppo - A 5\,000 year journey
DESCRIPTION:he Boghossian Foundation hosts an immersive and exclusively digital exhibition dedicated to Aleppo\, the multi-millennial city. \nFrom 2012 to 2016\, the battles of the Syrian civil war ravaged the city of Aleppo. Bombardments and fighting on the ground took a heavy toll on the civilian population\, but also on the material heritage. It is estimated that several hundred historic buildings were damaged or destroyed. Even today it is difficult to quantify what was lost in the destruction and what can be salvaged. \nThanks to several field missions in January and April 2017\, Iconem’s teams\, specialized in the digitization of endangered heritage\, managed to establish 3D models of several major monuments in the Old City of Aleppo. This work\, in addition to virtually safeguarding this heritage and enabling remote analysis\, makes the martyred remains of Syrian architecture accessible to the general public. \nImmersed in a slow stroll through the 3D models of Aleppo’s main monuments\, the visitor is confronted in turn with the harshness of the damage inflicted on the historic heart of the city and the beauty of the remains of these monuments.

SUMMARY:Risquons-Tout
DESCRIPTION:Risquons-Tout is an ambitious\, thematic group exhibition that aspires to present some of the most innovative and influential artists and authors living and working today in the Eurocore region\, from Amsterdam to Brussels\, Cologne\, Düsseldorf\, London and Paris. The title is borrowed from a place located on the Belgian-French border\, a real yet liminal space of transition\, of passage\, of informal exchanges\, notably smuggling. The invited artists negotiate different dynamics of bridging\, passing\, translating and transgressing. In doing so they burst the safe bubbles generated by prediction algorithms. \nThe exhibition’s geographic and political scope addresses today’s global connectivity\, trans-national circulation and diasporic movements. \nRisquons-Tout will also include a performative section and an Open School that will serve as a laboratory for artists and scholars to draw upon the questions addressed in the exhibition through a range of alternative methods for the transmission of knowledge. With this project\, WIELS’ aim is to help the European capital\, Brussels\, to develop artistic tools and cultural policies capable of addressing the issues and paradoxes of today. \nThis is a second of a series of triennial exhibitions launched by WIELS in 2017 with The Absent Museum\, made possible by the generous support of the Willame Foundation and the WIELS patrons. \nRisquons-Tout is curated by Dirk Snauwaert in collaboration with co-curators Zoë Gray and Devrim Bayar\, associate curator Helena Kritis for the performative section\, and Sofia Dati as curatorial assistant. \nThe programme of the Open School will be developed in collaboration with Intersections of Care\, Hotel Hippocampus and the School of Thinking (VUB).
