On paper, it\u2019s a reason to celebrate. In practice, it\u2019s a warning: we\u2019re rising on the map not because others are leaping forward, but because too many are falling behind.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s Brussels Pride, taking place on\u00a0Saturday, 17 May, isn\u2019t just a celebration of progress. It\u2019s a call to arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A fragile victory<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rainbowmap.ilga-europe.org\">Belgium\u2019s improved ranking<\/a> reflects the efforts of activists, lawmakers, and community leaders who continue to push for safer, more inclusive policies. But we didn\u2019t reach second place by reaching the finish line. We got there because the rest of the continent is burning and Belgium, for now, is holding the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Hungary, anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation is now enshrined in law. In Bulgaria and Slovakia, politicians scapegoat queer communities to score electoral points. From school curricula to asylum policies, hate is becoming institutionalized in more and more European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So yes, Belgium is doing better. But better isn\u2019t enough when\u00a0queer and trans people across the EU are under attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"253\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-253x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-253x1024.png 253w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-74x300.png 74w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-768x3109.png 768w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-379x1536.png 379w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-506x2048.png 506w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-3x12.png 3w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-rainbow-map-score-scaled.png 632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who gets left behind?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even within our own borders,\u00a0the fight is far from over. Intersex people in Belgium still face legal invisibility and medical violence. There are\u00a0no specific protections against unnecessary surgeries or forced treatments\u00a0on intersex children. The right to bodily autonomy remains a fight we haven\u2019t won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while Belgium likes to present itself as a safe haven,\u00a0queer refugees arriving here often find discrimination doesn\u2019t end at the border. Asylum procedures fail to grasp the complex realities of LGBTQIA+ persecution. Many are retraumatized in systems that question their identities and demand impossible proof of queerness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a country that\u2019s proud of its progress, too many are still unheard, unseen, and unprotected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The backlash is coordinated<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the Atlantic, the\u00a0Trump administration and its ideological allies\u00a0continue to export a toxic culture war: anti-trans bills, \u201cgender ideology\u201d conspiracies, attacks on queer education and healthcare. These ideas are no longer fringe\u2014they\u2019re mainstreamed into European discourse through far-right parties and Christian fundamentalist groups with deep pockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not just a cultural battle. It\u2019s a political project. And we need to confront it as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The far right is organizing. So must we.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pride is not a parade. It\u2019s resistance.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pride was born as a riot, and it remains a movement of resistance. This Saturday in Brussels, we march not just for ourselves, but for those who can\u2019t. For our trans siblings in Poland. For the lesbian women silenced in Slovakia. For intersex youth denied autonomy in our own hospitals. For queer refugees navigating a system that doesn\u2019t believe them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pride is where our joy becomes defiance. It\u2019s where our bodies, our voices, and our visibility challenge those who want us erased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may be second on the Rainbow Map, but we\u2019re\u00a0<strong>still first in line<\/strong>\u00a0when it comes to defending what\u2019s right. Belgium has the power and the responsibility to lead a new European wave of queer solidarity. The time for quiet tolerance is over.
