While Budapest Pride benefits from municipal backing, P\u00e9cs Pride is organized by private individuals, making its participants far more vulnerable to fines, surveillance, even criminal liability.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court of Hungary (K\u00faria) has upheld the ban. Organisers have vowed to go ahead despite the prohibition, saying they will not be silenced. The consequences carry real risks: attending a banned assembly is considered a <em>petty offense<\/em> punishable by fine. In P\u00e9cs, participants may be exposed to facial-recognition surveillance, high penalties, or even legal action against the organisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pecs-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pecs-1.png 1024w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pecs-1-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pecs-1-768x516.png 768w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pecs-1-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This specific ban is part of a broader crackdown. In March 2025, Hungary passed sweeping amendments to its Assembly Act, enabling authorities to ban queer public gatherings under the guise of protecting children from \u201cpromotion or depiction\u201d of homosexuality or gender diversity. The law is vague, granting broad discretion. It is also tied to the 2021 \u201cchild-protection\u201d law that already limits LGBTQ+ expression around minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the EU level, pressure mounts. The <strong>EU Fundamental Rights Agency<\/strong> warns that Hungary\u2019s measures may violate the <strong>EU Charter of Fundamental Rights<\/strong>. Human rights organisations, including ARTICLE 19, Amnesty, FIDH, and others, have called on the European Commission to open <strong>infringement proceedings<\/strong> and request <strong>interim measures<\/strong> to preserve freedom of assembly. In its annual briefing, the European Parliament has flagged Hungary\u2019s new assembly law as a direct threat to EU core principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, even under constraint, queers resist. Busting through bans, Budapest hosted one of its largest Pride marches ever, drawing tens of thousands from across Europe. The message: visibility matters, even when it\u2019s outlawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Brussels-based queers, P\u00e9cs Pride is not just a Hungarian story\u2014it\u2019s a test of European commitment to equality. If the EU fails to act to block this ban, what message does that send to queer people in Poland, in Bulgaria, or beyond? Our right to gather, to march, to exist openly in shared public space, must not be selectively allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can support P\u00e9cs Pride by signing the <strong>Amnesty petition \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/petition\/let-pride-march-in-hungary\/\">Let Pride march in Hungary<\/a>\u201d<\/strong>  <br>You can also sign the <strong>All Out petition \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/action.allout.org\/en\/m\/58994dd1\/\">EU: Stop Hungary\u2019s Pride ban<\/a>\u201d<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than that: demand that President von der Leyen, the European Commission, and your MEPs press for interim measures, open infringement cases, and ensure the safety of organisers and participants. The EU\u2019s promise of rights and dignity must apply equally to every corner\u2014including P\u00e9cs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Freedom of assembly is not optional<\/strong>.
