A new \u201cCompact for Academic Excellence\u201d demands that schools comply with an ideology that denies the existence of transgender people, defining \u201cmale\u201d and \u201cfemale\u201d solely through \u201creproductive function and biological processes.\u201d In short: sign away your inclusivity, or lose your money.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, this might seem like distant news \u2014 another episode in the ongoing U.S. culture war. But for queer people everywhere, including here in Brussels, it\u2019s a stark reminder that our rights are never guaranteed. The struggle for visibility, dignity, and self-definition transcends borders. What happens in Washington can ripple through classrooms in Europe, through funding policies, and even through the words we use to describe ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sharon-mccutcheon-uUkjeWxSh7c-unsplash-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sharon-mccutcheon-uUkjeWxSh7c-unsplash-1024x683-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sharon-mccutcheon-uUkjeWxSh7c-unsplash-1024x683-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sharon-mccutcheon-uUkjeWxSh7c-unsplash-1024x683-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sharon-mccutcheon-uUkjeWxSh7c-unsplash-1024x683-1-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spoke to <em>Nora<\/em>, a trans student from Belgium currently studying abroad, who feels the impact deeply. \u201c<strong>It\u2019s not just about America,\u201d<\/strong> she says. \u201c<strong>When a government says universities should stop recognizing trans students, it sends a message to the world: that trans lives are negotiable. And that\u2019s terrifying.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Universities \u2014 those spaces meant for curiosity, debate, and the celebration of difference \u2014 are now finding themselves at the crossroads of ideology and survival. The idea of \u201cacademic freedom\u201d is being twisted into a test of obedience. When political power starts deciding who counts as a man or a woman, it stops being about education altogether. It becomes about control \u2014 about shrinking the world instead of expanding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, amidst the fear, there\u2019s resilience. Across campuses in the U.S. and Europe, students and professors are organizing, building networks of solidarity that defy national borders. \u201cY<strong>ou can\u2019t unlearn humanity,<\/strong>\u201d says Nora with a smile. \u201c<strong>We exist \u2014 and we\u2019re not going anywhere.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
