Renee Nicole Good, a 37\u2011year\u2011old queer writer and mother of three, was killed on Wednesday by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a \u201ctargeted operation\u201d in Minneapolis, Minnesota. According to ICE, the shooting was an act of \u201cself\u2011defense,\u201d but local officials\u2014citing released video footage\u2014are disputing that version of events. The incident has renewed national debate about the use of force by immigration agents and the vulnerability of queer people of color and women within U.S. law enforcement systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good\u2019s death has shaken the local LGBTQ+ community and sparked calls for accountability from national advocacy groups. Her mother told the Minnesota Star Tribune<\/em> that Renee \u201cwas an extremely compassionate person who took care of others her whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A life devoted to creativity and family<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Renee earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in English Literature from Old Dominion University in Virginia in 2020. That same year, she won a poetry prize from the Academy of American Poets. The university\u2019s English Department remembered her on social media as \u201cbright, curious, and endlessly kind.\u201d Her published poetry appeared in several literary magazines, exploring love, motherhood, and self\u2011acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her private Instagram bio\u2014which includes a rainbow flag emoji\u2014Renee described herself as a \u201cpoet, writer, wife, mother, and bad guitar player from Colorado experimenting with Minneapolis.\u201d Offline, she shared her love of art and movies with her daughter and two sons, aged between 6 and 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renee had remarried and was raising her youngest child with her wife in Minneapolis. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support her family has already collected close to $800,000<\/strong>, reflecting a wave of solidarity and grief across the queer community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
