{"id":51087,"date":"2026-01-16T01:32:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T00:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/?p=51087"},"modified":"2026-01-12T12:46:54","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T11:46:54","slug":"another-study-shows-that-puberty-blockers-save-young-transgender-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/en\/2026\/01\/16\/another-study-shows-that-puberty-blockers-save-young-transgender-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Another study shows that puberty blockers save young transgender lives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/avmag.gr\/mia-akoma-meleti-apodeiknyei-oti-oi-anastoleis-tis-efiveias-sozoun-ta-nea-trans-atoma\/\">Another study proving that gender\u2011affirming care has a positive impact<\/a> on the mental health of transgender youth has been added to the growing body of research showing that puberty blockers are safe and effective.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study set to be published in the February issue of the Journal of Pediatrics has once again shown that transgender adolescents experience a \u201csignificant reduction\u201d in depression and anxiety after starting clinically approved hormone treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, carried out by pediatricians in Nevada, Texas and Missouri, examined the well\u2011being of 432 patients before and after treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants, aged 12 to 20, were surveyed about their mental health before and at least 364 days after starting treatment such as puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the Ask Suicide\u2011Screening Questions (ASQ) tool \u2013 an internationally recognised assessment of suicidality in young people and adults \u2013 the researchers found significant improvements in patients\u2019 mental health across all areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the results, suicidal behaviours among participants decreased significantly over time, and this rate continued to fall as time went on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reductions observed by clinicians were consistent regardless of gender identity, length of treatment and age at the start of treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This proves once again not only that gender\u2011affirming care is highly effective in improving the well\u2011being of transgender patients, but also that its effectiveness in reducing suicidal tendencies does not diminish with age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinicians recommended that the study be continued with \u201ca larger sample size and longer follow\u2011up\u201d in order to demonstrate more robustly the consistency of these outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous studies conducted around the world have shown that care for transgender people is almost always beneficial, particularly for young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An October 2024 study found that 97% of transgender people under 18 were \u201cvery satisfied\u201d with the results of their treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a May 2024 study, regret rates \u2013 often weaponised by transphobes \u2013 concerning gender\u2011affirming care are very low. This research showed that patients are more likely to regret a knee operation, breast augmentation surgery, or even having children than undergoing gender\u2011affirming treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the scientific evidence showing that such care can save lives \u2013 and almost always does \u2013 transphobic politicians regularly claim that transgender youth should not have access to clinically approved medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the United States, at least 27 states ban some forms of gender\u2011affirming care, depriving 40% of their transgender youth of access to treatment. In the United Kingdom, puberty blockers are also banned for transgender minors, while remaining freely available to cisgender young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This article
