Daryacu: A Safe Haven in Brussels for the Marginalized and Vulnerable

In the heart of Saint-Josse, Brussels, a unique project is quietly making a big difference for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents. daryacu, which means “our house,” is more than just a shelter—it’s a collective home and solidarity space for people facing economic, social, and structural discrimination, including migrants without papers, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those experiencing homelessness.

A Home Built on Solidarity

Located at 134 Rue de Liedekerke, daryacu is committed to creating the safest possible environment for people exploited or marginalized by society’s many forms of domination—be they economic, racial, patriarchal, or heteronormative. The project’s vision is simple yet ambitious: a world where a house is synonymous with solidarity, shared living, and mutual respect, free from artificial borders.

What Does daryacu Offer?

Shared Accommodation:
daryacu operates a co-living space with seven rooms, including two collective rooms (one for women, one for men) and other rooms for people from diverse and precarious backgrounds. Rent is adjusted according to each resident’s means, ensuring that those most in need can access safe housing.

Day Center:
The project also runs a day center, offering a welcoming place for undocumented migrants and other vulnerable people to rest, get information on their rights, find out where to get a meal or take a shower, and use the internet to contact loved ones. The center is a vital social hub, fostering connections between different communities and providing a rare sense of normalcy and dignity for people in transit.

daryacu’s work relies on community support, and there are many ways to get involved:

Financial Support: Every Euro Counts

daryacu is officially recognized by the Belgian tax authorities, making donations 45% tax-deductible. For example, a €100 donation will cost you only €55 after tax deductions. Even a small contribution can make a difference: €8 covers a night’s accommodation for one person in a shared room. Donations, whether one-off or monthly, help daryacu continue to provide dignified shelter and support to those in need.
