Some of our favourite things are coming together at the Design Museum this year, with a major exhibition exploring Brussels Queer Graphics.
Opening in May and running through until November, Brussels Queer Graphics takes a look at the visual language that is synonymous with engagement, celebration, and activism in LGTBQIA+ communities.
As well as looking at what is happening within today’s queer community in Brussels – from a design and visual language perspective – the exhibition also looks back through past decades, showcasing how a shared visual language illustrates and communicates the collective principles, identities, and values of LGBTQIA+ people in Brussels.
Milestones recognised within the exhibition include the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Belgian Cultural Center – believed to be the first organised association of queer people in Belgium – and also the 20th anniversary of Belgium’s embrace of marriage equality.
It’s rare for a major design museum to centre the visual language of queer people in this way – it’s powerful representation and cultural recognition.
Brussels Queer Graphics will run at the Design Museum from 17 May until 5 November
