Various Voices Brussels 2026: the choir festival is getting its volunteer chorus ready

In less than two months, Brussels will host Various Voices 2026, Europe’s biggest LGBTQI+ choir festival, with more than 4,200 singers from 112 choirs expected in the city. This Sunday at 13:00, at Les Grands Carmes, a first meeting will bring together 105 future volunteers who will help welcome participants and make the festival run smoothly. Behind the scenes, the temperature is rising: organisation teams have been working for over six years on this edition, and they are still looking for extra hands to join the adventure.

A festival years in the making

As KET already reported, Various Voices Brussels 2026 will transform the city from 24 to 28 June 2026 into a massive choir hub, with concerts in venues like Bozar, Cirque Royal, La Madeleine and the Royal Museums. It is the first time the festival comes to Brussels on this scale, and for the local LGBTQI+ scene it is one of the cultural highlights of the year.

What is less visible from the outside is the time and energy already invested. Members of the Various Voices board and the Brussels organising team have been working on this project for more than six years: building partnerships, booking venues, coordinating with Legato (the European LGBTQI+ choir network), planning logistics and imagining how to make thousands of singers feel at home in the city.

105 volunteers, and counting

This Sunday’s meeting at Les Grands Carmes is the first big moment where the volunteer “choir” comes together. Around 105 future volunteers will gather to:

• Meet the various festival coordinators and members of the board
• Discover the different volunteer roles (welcome, logistics, artist care, audience support, info points, etc.)
• Start building the human connections that will make the festival experience warm and fluid for everyone

These volunteers will be on the front line to welcome the 4,200+ singers de 112 choirs, help them navigate the city, get them to the right stages, and make sure the public also finds its way. In many ways, they are the invisible infrastructure of the festival.

Still looking for extra hands

Even with more than a hundred people already on board, the team is still looking for volunteers – especially for tasks that need to happen before the festival officially starts. If you are in or near Brussels and want to help, they are particularly looking for people who can:

• Aide install signage and wayfinding before the festival (posters, arrows, info boards in and around venues)
• Prepare the welcome packs for participants (badges, programmes, maps, little gifts, practical info)

These tasks are perfect if you like working with your hands, organising things, or contributing without necessarily being “on stage” during the event itself. They are also a nice way to get a backstage look at how a festival of this size is built.

A milestone for Brussels’ queer life

For Brussels’ queer communities, Various Voices is more than a festival “passing through”. It is a rare moment where LGBTQI+ culture takes over some of the city’s most prestigious venues through collective singing rather than big-name headliners. It also brings together choirs from across Europe (and beyond) that carry their own local stories of activism, care and community.

Seeing 4,200 singers land in the capital, rehearsing, exploring the city, performing in formal halls and informal pop‑up spaces, will be a powerful reminder that queer life is not just about nightlife or protest. It is also about harmony, breath, shared rhythms and the very physical experience of singing together.
