Il est caricaturiste, a 30 ans et vit \u00e0 Beyrouth. Dans la capitale, il d\u00e9file presque tous les jours contre la corruption tout en essayant de vivre au mieux son homosexualit\u00e9 dans un pays o\u00f9 les LGBTQIA + sont r\u00e9prim\u00e9s, mais o\u00f9 il existe parfois, encore, des espaces de libert\u00e9 souvent menac\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Porte-parole du mouvement queer libanais, l'auteur explore, \u00e0 travers son h\u00e9ros Samar, les peurs et les doutes d'une jeunesse meurtrie par l'homophobie, le ch\u00f4mage et la guerre, qu'il exorcise dans une \u0153uvre forte en po\u00e9sie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La marginalisation et le genre sont des th\u00e8mes majeurs dans les illustrations et les bandes dessin\u00e9es actuelles de Joseph. Joseph fait partie du collectif <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/samandalcomics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Samandal Comics<\/a> avec laquelle il a \u00e9dit\u00e9 deux ouvrages collectifs : \"G\u00e9ographie\" et \"3000\", ainsi qu'une nouvelle s\u00e9rie de livres solos de diff\u00e9rents auteurs. Pouvez-vous dire \u00e0 nos lecteurs de quoi il s'agit ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L'histoire se d\u00e9roule donc \u00e0 Beyrouth, 30 ans apr\u00e8s la fin d'une longue et horrible guerre civile. Samar est un jeune artiste de bandes dessin\u00e9es qui tente d'\u00e9crire son premier livre. Le monde dans lequel il vit d\u00e9clenche beaucoup d'angoisses au quotidien : celles qui sont li\u00e9es \u00e0 sa s\u00e9curit\u00e9 en tant qu'homosexuel vivant \u00e0 Beyrouth, \u00e0 son avenir et \u00e0 son art. Le livre est une s\u00e9rie de moments : des r\u00eaves angoissants, des souvenirs d'enfance, des histoires d'amour et des promenades dans les sc\u00e8nes souterraines et les d\u00e9cors de Beyrouth. \u00c0 travers les yeux de Samar, nous assistons au regard de toute une communaut\u00e9 vivant \u00e0 Beyrouth, \u00e0 un moment o\u00f9 la ville conna\u00eet l'un des changements les plus radicaux de son histoire contemporaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Quelle part de vous-m\u00eame se retrouve dans votre personnage principal, Samar ?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beaucoup de mes traits de caract\u00e8re se retrouvent dans Samar, mais il n'est pas vraiment moi. Une grande partie de lui et de ce qu'il vit dans l'histoire est fictive. J'ai besoin de garder cette distance avec lui, m\u00eame si je raconte son histoire \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re personne du singulier. J'ai besoin de la libert\u00e9 d'utiliser mes propres histoires \u00e0 Beyrouth et de les romancer, en les rendant plus ou moins sp\u00e9cifiques ou vraisemblables. De plus, de nombreux aspects de mes propres histoires sont ceux que j'\u00e9vite de raconter pour l'instant. Comment est-ce possible d'\u00eatre une personne homosexuelle \u00e0 Beyrouth ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il n'y a pas de r\u00e9ponse claire \u00e0 cette question : il y a beaucoup d'exp\u00e9riences et de voix diff\u00e9rentes qui peuvent \u00eatre rendues invisibles si nous essayons de r\u00e9duire la question \u00e0 une r\u00e9ponse claire telle que \"oui, c'est super cool d'\u00eatre gay \u00e0 Beyrouth\" ou \"non, c'est tellement difficile et dangereux d'\u00eatre gay \u00e0 Beyrouth\". Ces deux r\u00e9ponses sont incorrectes. De plus, cela fait 3 ans que je ne vis plus \u00e0 Beyrouth et je sais que beaucoup de choses ont chang\u00e9 depuis le d\u00e9but de l'effondrement, donc je ne peux pas vraiment pr\u00e9tendre savoir comment c'est maintenant d'\u00eatre une personne homosexuelle l\u00e0-bas. Je pourrais dire que, de 2008 \u00e0 2018, pour moi personnellement, \u00eatre queer \u00e9tait possible, et impossible de tant de fa\u00e7ons diff\u00e9rentes. Il \u00e9tait possible de trouver des espaces souterrains plus s\u00fbrs (clubs, bars, collectifs, groupes) o\u00f9 l'on peut \u00eatre out, il \u00e9tait aussi possible de se sentir ali\u00e9n\u00e9 dans ces m\u00eames espaces, il \u00e9tait aussi possible d'\u00eatre discr\u00e8tement queer ou dans le placard sans ressentir la pression envahissante du coming out, il \u00e9tait m\u00eame possible de se faire arr\u00eater pour avoir pratiqu\u00e9 la sodomie, ou de s'embrasser dans un club et de se sentir en s\u00e9curit\u00e9, etc. Cela peut sembler tr\u00e8s vague et paradoxal, mais ce qui m'importe, ce sont les individus, ce qu'ils ressentent et vivent dans tout cela, et comment leur apporter plus de soins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pouvez-vous nous expliquer votre parcours depuis votre collaboration avec le collectif de bande dessin\u00e9e Samandal au Liban jusqu'\u00e0 la publication de votre premier roman chez Casterman en Belgique ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J'ai d\u00e9couvert Samandal lorsque j'\u00e9tais encore \u00e9tudiant \u00e0 Beyrouth. Quand j'ai vu leurs publications, il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s clair pour moi que c'est l\u00e0 que la bande dessin\u00e9e se passe dans ma ville et que c'est l\u00e0 que je veux appartenir. J'ai eu la chance, plus tard, d'\u00eatre pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au groupe et de faire partie de l'\u00e9quipe de r\u00e9daction. Par la suite, je me suis consid\u00e9rablement impliqu\u00e9 dans des projets plus importants visant \u00e0 donner une nouvelle direction \u00e9ditoriale au collectif. Cette longue exp\u00e9rience a \u00e9t\u00e9 une sorte de rite de passage : \u00eatre auteur de roman graphique est pass\u00e9 d'une ambition id\u00e9ale \u00e0 une pratique quotidienne possible, avec l'aide d'autres personnes, en unissant mes forces et en m'auto\u00e9ditant. J'ai beaucoup appris sur l'\u00e9dition, la mise en page, les techniques d'impression, la fabrication de livres, etc. et surtout, j'ai publi\u00e9 de nombreuses histoires courtes que je consid\u00e8re comme un travail pr\u00e9paratoire \u00e0 ce que je fais maintenant et \u00e0 L'Intranquille. Dites-nous ce que vous aimez dans notre ville ?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J'aime le fait que Bruxelles soit une petite ville tr\u00e8s \u00e9clectique. Le paysage change rapidement d'un quartier \u00e0 l'autre, et cela me rappelle un peu Beyrouth. En plus de cela, j'y ai des amiti\u00e9s tr\u00e8s solides : l'artiste <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barrackrima.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baraque Rima<\/a> fait partie de notre groupe d'amis et d'artistes, j'ai beaucoup appris d'elle et elle m'a accueillie plusieurs fois dans son atelier \u00e0 Bruxelles, pour prendre du temps libre, d\u00e9couvrir le lieu, dessiner etc. Aussi, je suis une amie proche et admiratrice de l'\u00e9quipe de L'employ\u00e9 du Moi et de leurs publications, de Rebecca Prosper et Elisa Huberty et de leur espace d'art socio-politiquement engag\u00e9 \"<a href=\"https:\/\/thatswhatxsaid.com\/artistes\/joseph-kai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C'est ce que X a dit<\/a>\", mon \u00e9diteur Nathalie Van Campenhoudt, et l'\u00e9quipe de Casterman mon \u00e9diteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tu es tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9sent dans la sc\u00e8ne queer bruxelloise. On t'a vu au festival AIWA de Lagrange Points et \u00e0 la galerie Thatswhatxsaid. Comment avez-vous collabor\u00e9 sur ces projets ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barrack Rima avait initi\u00e9 le festival queer Aiwa avec l'\u00e9quipe de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lagrangepointsbrussels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Point de Lagrange<\/a>Ils m'ont invit\u00e9 \u00e0 y participer et \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter mon livre L'Intranquille en public. C'\u00e9tait un moment important pour moi, je parlais de mon livre pour la premi\u00e8re fois, et j'ai eu la chance de le faire dans un espace s\u00fbr pour les LGBTQIA+. D'autre part, Elisa et Rebecca de la galerie TWXS m'ont contact\u00e9 \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s au m\u00eame moment pour discuter de l'exposition de mon travail dans leur nouvelle boutique\/galerie, et j'\u00e9tais tr\u00e8s enthousiaste \u00e0 l'id\u00e9e, car cela semblait tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9cifique et engag\u00e9, et je n'avais pas de tirages disponibles \u00e0 Bruxelles \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque. Il peut s'agir d'un d\u00e9tail morphologique ou stylistique. Certains d'entre eux peuvent sembler maladroits ou ressemblent \u00e0 des marionnettes, mais cela ne me d\u00e9range pas vraiment, j'aime cet aspect interm\u00e9diaire entre l'humain et le robot. J'ai aussi l'impression que cela se traduit dans mon choix de couleurs.
