As reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruzz.be\/actua\/samenleving\/vub-onderzoeker-jongeren-steeds-minder-tolerant-tegenover-lgbtqia-gemeenschap\">BRUZZ<\/a>, researchers found a troubling shift in attitudes, particularly among boys aged 12 to 18.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trend breaks with previous generations, where acceptance of sexual and gender diversity had been steadily increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Decline in Acceptance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to VUB sociologist\u00a0Henny Bos\u00a0and PhD researcher\u00a0Hannes Coudenys, the findings show that\u00a0tolerance levels are dropping, especially when it comes to homosexuality and transgender identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYoung people today are growing up in a more polarised world,\u201d says Coudenys, \u201cand that\u2019s influencing how they think about gender and sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Girls continue to show higher levels of acceptance, but even among them, a slight decline has been observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Role of Social Media and the Anti-Woke Backlash<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers highlight\u00a0toxic online environments\u00a0as a key driver behind this shift. Influencers and online personalities who push anti-woke narratives have a real impact on young minds, particularly when positive role models or open conversations about diversity are lacking at school or at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some teens also express\u00a0confusion or frustration\u00a0about the growing complexity of gender and sexual identities, which can make them less open or more resistant to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why This Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For LGBTQIA+ teens, these attitudes can have\u00a0serious consequences. Feeling unsafe, unseen, or unwelcome can deeply affect their mental health, sense of belonging, and overall development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KET Magazine believes this is a wake-up call for schools, parents, youth organisations and media to\u00a0invest more in inclusive education and representation.
