With <em>N\u00e9 pour \u00eatre viril<\/em>, Romain Delhoux and Karim Dumoulin deliver a story that is both deeply personal and strikingly universal. This solo performance \u2014 blending theatre, dance, and autobiography \u2014 explores the tensions, wounds, and beauty in the making of masculinity, in a world where &#8220;being a man&#8221; often remains a heavy norm, even within queer communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show opens in a locker room \u2014 a setting heavy with symbolism. &#8220;T<strong>he locker room felt loaded with masculine tension,<\/strong>&#8221; Karim explains. &#8220;I<strong>t reminds you of Rocky, of pushing yourself to the limit, of sweat, of competition between bodies. It\u2019s a paradoxical place \u2014 about showing off and hiding at the same time. And let\u2019s be honest, all these muscled guys in one room \u2014 there\u2019s something inherently homoerotic about it!<\/strong>&#8221; From this charged starting point, the performance unfolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired by his own life experiences, Romain brings to life a search for identity that breaks out of traditional boxes. &#8220;<strong>Karim created a safe, caring space for me to work,&#8221;<\/strong> he shares. &#8220;H<strong>is input helped me balance my story \u2014 making it personal, but still relatable to others.<\/strong>&#8221; Together, they built the text hand-in-hand, carefully avoiding the trap of making it just a therapeutic confession. &#8220;<strong>We wanted intimacy, but not self-indulgence,<\/strong>&#8221; Karim points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>N\u00e9 pour \u00eatre viril<\/em> also refuses to fall into tragedy. Rather than following a classic &#8220;trauma-to-survival&#8221; narrative, the show charts a path of resilience. &#8220;T<strong>oo many queer stories end in disaster or only frame the character as a survivor,<\/strong>&#8221; says Karim. &#8220;<strong>We wanted to show that beyond violence or confusion, there is the possibility of building a stable, loving life<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The performance weaves violence, tenderness, and love \u2014 not in a strict timeline, but thematically. &#8220;<strong>We didn\u2019t want a story that spirals into despair,<\/strong>&#8221; Romain explains. &#8220;<strong>The progression moves from harsh beginnings toward moments of softness and hope<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although rooted in Romain\u2019s own experiences, the story resonates widely. &#8220;<strong>I\u2019m touched when people from completely different backgrounds tell me they see themselves in this journey,<\/strong>&#8221; he shares. Because beyond coming out, <em>N\u00e9 pour \u00eatre viril<\/em> questions masculinity itself. &#8220;<strong>Whether you&#8217;re in a straight or queer world, masculinity is always being policed,<\/strong>&#8221; Karim says. &#8220;Y<strong>ou\u2019re never \u2018man enough\u2019, or you\u2019re \u2018too feminine\u2019 \u2014 but what does that even mean? Maybe it\u2019s about elegance, about taste, about how you move through the world<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This exploration of fluid masculinity is amplified through the show\u2019s dance and movement. &#8220;D<strong>ance helps me express what words cannot,<\/strong>&#8221; Romain explains. Each dance sequence deepens the emotion, adding a layer of poetry. &#8220;Dance lets the body explore the space between masculine and feminine, strength and softness,&#8221; says Karim. &#8220;<strong>It also gives the audience room to breathe and reflect.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the start, Romain and Karim envisioned a performance that would be accessible, traveling beyond elite stages. &#8220;<strong>We wanted to bring this story to people \u2014 whether in Brussels, or in the smallest cultural center in Wallonia,<\/strong>&#8221; says Romain. <em>N\u00e9 pour \u00eatre viril<\/em> is meant for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why the next performance, on May 13 at the Centre Bruegel in Brussels, feels especially important.
