That could soon change. In the city\u2019s new participatory budget round, a bold proposal has been shortlisted: a queer community house with a budget of 120 million forints, driven by the H\u00e1tt\u00e9r Society, Labrisz Lesbian Association and the Hungarian LGBT Alliance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"<strong>It\u2019s crucial to have a space where we can truly connect with one another<\/strong>,\u201d says Zsrika Hella, one of the project\u2019s initiators. She and Hanzli P\u00e9ter have been dreaming of such a place for years \u2013 one that combines services, culture, workshops, parties, and maybe even a queer embroidery circle. P\u00e9ter recalls with a smile: \u201c<strong>Back in 2002 I\u2019d already drawn the floor plan of a three-storey community house. Naturally, there was a library<\/strong>.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This idea builds from real institution and resources. The H\u00e1tt\u00e9r Society currently operates from <strong>1136 Budapest, Balzac u. 8\u201310., fszt. 1<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/hatter.hu\/egyesuletunk\/elerhetoseg?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H\u00e1tt\u00e9r T\u00e1rsas\u00e1g+2H\u00e1tt\u00e9r Society+2<\/a> The hope is that the future queer house could integrate or expand from such addresses into a visible, permanent space for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept doesn\u2019t come from nowhere. Warsaw already has a thriving LGBTQ+ centre; Tel Aviv\u2019s serves support groups for queer families, seniors and youth; elsewhere choirs or caf\u00e9s anchor local communities. In Budapest this would be the first permanent base \u2013 offices for NGOs, event rooms, and, above all, a safe meeting place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Hella, it\u2019s more than practical: it\u2019s emotional. \u201c<strong>One of the strongest antidotes to minority stress is a sense of belonging. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to have a space where we can access services designed for us.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, the project\u2019s future lies in the hands of Budapest residents, students and workers, who can vote online to support it. P\u00e9ter sees it as a milestone: \u201c<strong>This isn\u2019t just about us. It would show that Hungary has reached a point where its capital belongs on Europe\u2019s queer map.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether in Brussels, Berlin or Budapest, the message is the same: safe, welcoming community spaces are needed everywhere. An LGBTQIA+ centre isn\u2019t a luxury \u2013 it\u2019s the foundation for our shared future.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Brussels it may seem surprising, but in Budapest
