As they celebrate a decade of community work, their message is clear: music, mutual aid and rights defence all belong in the same struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten years ago, a small group of volunteers from different Balkan countries came together in Brussels with a simple observation: queer people with Balkan backgrounds were falling through the cracks. Between homophobia and transphobia \u201cback home\u201d, racism and xenophobia in Belgium, language barriers and complex procedures, many were left to navigate everything alone. Out of that reality,&nbsp;<strong>Balkan LGBTQIA<\/strong>&nbsp;was born \u2013 an association based at RainbowHouse Brussels that has spent a decade helping, supporting and defending LGBTQIA+ people from the Balkan region and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"697\" src=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Capture-decran-2026-02-24-112041.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Capture-decran-2026-02-24-112041.jpg 460w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Capture-decran-2026-02-24-112041-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Capture-decran-2026-02-24-112041-8x12.jpg 8w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"from-grassroots-volunteers-to-a-community-anchor\">From grassroots volunteers to a community anchor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balkan LGBTQIA was founded by volunteers coming from various Balkan countries, bringing their own migration stories, languages and activist experiences. The team offers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>legal consultations<\/strong>&nbsp;or referrals when people face discrimination, violence, housing or migration issues;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>translation and interpretation<\/strong>, to help community members communicate better with institutions, lawyers, doctors or social services;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>listening and orientation<\/strong>, so that no one has to take on bureaucracies and hostile environments alone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many, especially those who are newly arrived or still insecure in their status, having someone who speaks their language and understands both Balkan contexts and Belgian systems can be the difference between isolation and empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"balkan-party-the-musical-fight-against-borders\">Balkan Party: the musical fight against borders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve heard of Balkan LGBTQIA, it\u2019s probably through their most famous and authentic action:&nbsp;<strong>the musical battle known as BALKAN PARTY<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These nights are much more than a party. They are designed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>break down discriminatory barriers<\/strong>&nbsp;faced by LGBTQIA+ people from the Balkans;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>challenge conflicts and divisions between different Balkan communities<\/strong>, often imported from nationalist politics or historical tensions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>create a space where&nbsp;<strong>everyone can dance together as humans first<\/strong>, regardless of origin, religion, passport or language.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the dancefloor, turbofolk meets pop, Roma music meets electro, diaspora kids meet newcomers. The politics is in the mix: Balkan Party insists that joy, music and cultural pride are valid forms of resistance, especially for communities that are often only seen through the lens of \u201cproblem\u201d or \u201cvictim\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-this-10-year-milestone-matters\">Why this 10-year milestone matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten years on, Balkan LGBTQIA has helped countless people navigate discrimination, build friendships and reclaim joy in a context of rising racism, anti-migrant rhetoric and anti-queer backlash across Europe and the Balkans. Their work shows why intersectional organising is not a buzzword but a necessity: you cannot address queerphobia in the Balkans without talking about nationalism, you cannot support Balkan queers in Brussels without talking about migration, class and language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Brussels\u2019 LGBTQIA+ scene, the association has also been a reminder that&nbsp;<strong>Pride is multilingual and diasporic<\/strong>. Balkan LGBTQIA brings stories, music and political realities that complicate the often West-centric narrative of queer rights.
