Donald Trump’s latest address to Congress was a showcase of misinformation, fearmongering, and direct attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. Wrapped in exaggerated claims and outright falsehoods, his speech made one thing clear: he’s willing to sacrifice fundamental rights to rally his base.
At the heart of his rhetoric was a dangerous obsession with gender issues. Trump railed against what he called the “tyranny of wokeness”, specifically targeting trans and non-binary people. He falsely claimed to have banned the “sexual mutilation of children”, a misleading and inflammatory way to describe gender-affirming care—when in reality, his attempt to defund institutions offering such care has been blocked in court. He even called for criminalizing parents who support their trans children, a chilling move aimed at erasing queer youth.

He went on to defend his “two genders” executive order, calling it “common sense,” and denounced the presence of “men in women’s sports”, using trans athletes as a political scapegoat. These attacks are nothing new, but they are becoming increasingly dangerous as he fuels a culture of fear and division.
Beyond his LGBTQ+ rhetoric, Trump’s speech was packed with lies about the economy, immigration, and his own legal troubles. He painted himself as a victim of political persecution, all while pushing authoritarian-leaning narratives about free speech and government control.
But the queer community refuses to be erased. Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, called his speech “a spectacle of chaos, cruelty, and corruption”, reminding us that Trump does not have the power to erase LGBTQ+ existence. Meanwhile, Lambda Legal vowed to continue challenging his discriminatory policies in court, reaffirming that LGBTQ+ rights will not be rolled back without a fight.
This speech wasn’t just another political stunt—it was a stark reminder of the ongoing threats to queer rights. Trump’s rhetoric, filled with exclusion and fear, cannot be ignored.
