But there\u2019s a twist: these stories are being told with a fresh perspective, shaped by our recent experience with the COVID-19 pandemic. The result? A powerful, relatable look at how society reacts to the unknown, and how history echoes through new generations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Films, Old Fears<\/strong><br>In &#8220;Alpha&#8221; by French director Julia Ducournau (who already wowed Cannes with &#8220;Titane&#8221; in 2021), and in &#8220;Le Myst\u00e9rieux regard du flamant rose&#8221; by Chilean filmmaker Diego C\u00e9spedes (which just snagged the Un Certain Regard prize), a mysterious new virus is at the center of the plot. It spreads rapidly\u2014especially among drug users and the LGBT community\u2014creating panic and confusion. In &#8220;Alpha,&#8221; crowds desperately gather outside hospitals, hoping for help. In C\u00e9spedes\u2019 film, set in a remote desert village, people believe the disease can be spread just by looking at someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ALPHA - Official Teaser Trailer - In Theaters October\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vrBEZNAiJIA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These stories aren\u2019t just about the virus itself\u2014they\u2019re about how fear can infect every layer of society. Ducournau, who grew up in the 80s and 90s when AIDS was devastating communities, remembers being more scared of the isolation and judgment than the illness itself. \u201cYou could find yourself completely alone in the world because people decided you were a danger,\u201d she told AFP. Even in the schoolyard, a scraped knee could make you an outcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u00e9spedes, too, recalls the \u201cdark, dangerous\u201d image of AIDS that he grew up with, shaped by warnings from his mother. That\u2019s why he chose to focus on trans women in his film\u2014characters who, despite being rejected by society, find joy and solidarity together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo new clip official from Cannes Film Festival 2025\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I5KyBIeomOw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stories Rooted in Real Lives<\/strong><br>Spanish director Carla Sim\u00f3n\u2019s &#8220;Romer\u00eda&#8221; (also in competition) takes a more personal approach. The film follows a teenage girl traveling to Galicia to uncover the story of her parents, both heroin users who died of AIDS. She discovers a family history shrouded in secrecy and shame\u2014a reflection of Spain\u2019s devastating AIDS crisis in the 1980s, when the country had the highest rates in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Echoes of COVID-19<\/strong><br>If some of these scenes\u2014packed hospitals, gloves and masks, people afraid to touch\u2014feel familiar, it\u2019s not a coincidence. The parallels between the early AIDS years and the recent pandemic are striking. As Franck Finance-Madureira, founder of Cannes\u2019 Queer Palm award, points out: \u201cThe fear of others, the need to protect yourself, the way panic spreads when we don\u2019t understand a disease\u2014it\u2019s all very similar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s a key difference. As Sim\u00f3n notes, AIDS carried a heavy stigma, often blamed on \u201cbad\u201d behavior like drug use or being gay. With COVID, anyone could catch it\u2014there was fear, but not the same taboo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Romer\u00eda - Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TUch0tgMW_Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why These Films Matter\u2014Especially for Young People<\/strong><br>For many young people today, the trauma of the AIDS crisis isn\u2019t something they\u2019ve lived through or even learned much about. \u201cYoung people are very, very uninformed about this topic,\u201d says Sim\u00f3n. \u201cIt\u2019s important to keep talking about it, to understand how traumatic it was.\u201d Kevin Robert Frost, head of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), agrees: \u201cFor a lot of young people, it\u2019s just not on their radar. I hope these films help raise awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More Than Just History<\/strong><br>These Cannes films aren\u2019t just about looking back\u2014they\u2019re about connecting past and present, showing how fear and stigma can shape lives, and reminding us that empathy and understanding are always in style.
