In a recent feature, Spanish queer magazine\u00a0Shangay\u00a0breaks down new data from\u00a0FELGTBI+, Spain\u2019s national LGBTQ+ federation, and the picture is sharp:\u00a0the most economically precarious queer people are also the ones who face the highest levels of hate and violence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dank aan&nbsp;<strong>ELMA \u2013 the European LGBTQIA+ Magazines Association<\/strong>, ket can adapt and share this story from Spain, because it speaks directly to what many people experience in Brussels and across Belgium too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"574\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-11-090002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-11-090002.jpg 574w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-11-090002-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hate-on-the-rise\">Hate on the rise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, based on a survey of around&nbsp;<strong>800 LGTBIQ+ people<\/strong>, shows a clear spike in reported hate incidents over the last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 2024 and 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reported\u00a0<strong>harassment<\/strong>\u00a0rose from about\u00a0<strong>20% to 36%<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>discriminatie<\/strong>\u00a0van\u00a0<strong>23% to 29%<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>en\u00a0<strong>physical attacks<\/strong>\u00a0van\u00a0<strong>7% to 22%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than&nbsp;<strong>half<\/strong>&nbsp;of respondents say they experienced at least&nbsp;<strong>one hate incident<\/strong>&nbsp;in a single year, and&nbsp;<strong>22%<\/strong>&nbsp;report a physical assault. FELGTBI+ president&nbsp;<strong>Paula Iglesias<\/strong>&nbsp;uses one word repeatedly: urgency. She calls for a&nbsp;<strong>state\u2011level pact against hate speech and hate crime<\/strong>, arguing that when hate grows, protection must grow even faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study\u2019s main researcher,&nbsp;<strong>Mar\u00eda Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, adds another layer: for many people, these aren\u2019t one\u2011off shocks but&nbsp;<strong>repeated attacks<\/strong>. Around half of those who report incidents have experienced them&nbsp;<strong>three or more times in five years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-14-130450-1024x636.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-14-130450-1024x636.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-14-130450-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-14-130450-768x477.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ket.brussels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Capture-decran-2026-05-14-130450.jpg 1329w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"poverty-as-a-risk-multiplier\">Poverty as a risk multiplier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where the article really hits is when it maps these experiences onto&nbsp;<strong>income levels<\/strong>. The survey shows that LGTBIQ+ people living on&nbsp;<strong>less than 1,000 euros a month<\/strong>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>significantly more likely<\/strong>&nbsp;to experience homophobia and transphobia than those with higher incomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precarity becomes a&nbsp;<strong>risk multiplier<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>less room to move if the neighbourhood turns hostile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more dependence on family or employers who might be queer\u2011phobic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more time in public space and on public transport, where many attacks happen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study also highlights familiar patterns:&nbsp;<strong>trans people, young people, racialised people, disabled folks and those with lower levels of formal education or unstable housing<\/strong>&nbsp;are over\u2011represented among victims. It\u2019s the intersection of class, race, gender, age and health that shapes who is most exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"more-hate-but-also-more-reporting\">More hate, but also more reporting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is at least one encouraging trend:&nbsp;<strong>more people are filing complaints<\/strong>. According to the figures cited by Shangay, police reports of hate incidents against LGTBIQ+ people in Spain have almost&nbsp;<strong>doubled<\/strong>&nbsp;in two years, reaching around&nbsp;<strong>35%<\/strong>&nbsp;of cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers say that is not only because there is more hate, but also because there is&nbsp;<strong>more awareness<\/strong>&nbsp;en&nbsp;<strong>more trust<\/strong>&nbsp;in reporting mechanisms. Community organisations, campaigns and media coverage are all pushing people to say \u201cenough\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not everyone can use those tools equally. Those who are most precarious, isolated or dependent on hostile environments (families, religious contexts, workplaces) still face the highest barriers to going to the police or to court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"from-madrid-to-brussels\">From Madrid to Brussels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read from Brussels, this Spanish snapshot feels uncomfortably familiar. Belgium often appears high in European rankings for LGBTQIA+ rights, but on the ground, it is&nbsp;<strong>queer and trans people who are poor, racialised, migrants, Roma, undocumented, disabled or in unstable housing<\/strong>&nbsp;who are most frequently targeted \u2013 and least protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the key lesson in Shangay\u2019s piece:&nbsp;<strong>homophobia and transphobia are not just about attitudes, but also about social inequality<\/strong>.
