BREAKING FREE: Trans Icon Johan Jenny Ehrenberg Comes to Brussels

When a voice like Johan Jenny Ehrenberg’s reaches Brussels, it’s more than an event — it’s a statement. On Tuesday, February 25, the Swedish writer, publisher, and activist will speak at RainbowHouse Bruxelles in an evening dedicated to identity, freedom, and resistance.

A pioneer in both media and activism, Ehrenberg is best known as the founder of ETC, one of Sweden’s most influential progressive publishing groups. Across four decades, they have been a relentless advocate for equality, climate justice, and feminism — using journalism, literature, and art to challenge power structures and promote social change. Their work embodies a deeply personal vision: that freedom of identity and freedom of expression are two sides of the same fight.

In 1983, Ehrenberg — then publicly known as Jenny — faced a wave of hatred and threats after coming out trans in Sweden. Four decades later, those painful memories have become part of a powerful new artistic journey. Rediscovered photos from that era inspired “Free”, an exhibition exploring the intersection of gender, politics, and self-liberation.

This talk connects deeply personal experience to a broader European conversation: why trans rights are inseparable from democracy, liberty, and human dignity. As far-right movements across Europe intensify attacks on queer and trans people, Ehrenberg’s visit is a call to awareness, solidarity, and action.
