Ocean Vuong at Bozar: When the Luminous and the Broken Meet

On 14 March 2026, Vietnamese American writer and poet Ocean Vuong comes to Bozar for a special “Meet the Writer” evening co‑organized with Passa Porta. A rare chance to hear one of the most vital voices in contemporary queer literature reflect on identity, language, memory, and what happens when beauty and ugliness collide.

At the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, the announcement sets the tone with a disarming question: what if beauty and ugliness were not opposites, but coexisted, clashed, and shaped us? This is the paradox Ocean Vuong invites the Brussels audience to explore, through carefully chosen excerpts from his new novel The Emperor of Gladness and from earlier work.

Born in Saigon in 1988 and raised in the United States after his family’s migration, Vuong has emerged as one of the defining literary voices of his generation, weaving together migration, the legacy of the Vietnam War, class, and queerness. His novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous has become a global success, translated into numerous languages and embraced by readers well beyond the traditional poetry world.

As a poet, Vuong is known for collections such as Night Sky with Exit Wounds et Time Is a Mother, where he crafts a language that is both intensely sensory and politically sharp. Memory, violence, grief, and desire run through his work, often in forms that bend or break conventional structures. His writing has been recognised with major distinctions, including the T.S. Eliot Prize, a Whiting Award, and a MacArthur Fellowship.

The Brussels event is designed as a space for public intimacy: readings, a conversation about linguistic identity (writing in English with a body shaped by other languages), and reflections on how trauma and tenderness can inhabit the same sentence. The evening is part of Passa Porta’s ongoing commitment to international literature and to writers whose work moves across borders—geographical, linguistic, and gendered.
