On Saturday 13 June, the TAKEOVER season by Brussels Urban Sessions rolls back into town with a full day dedicated to BMX Freestyle at the Tour & Taxis skatepark. From 11:00 to 22:00, riders of all ages can try, train and throw down their best tricks for more than €1000 worth of BMX gear. With free entry, music and food on site, it’s a chance to discover urban sports up close and to support a new generation of riders claiming space in the city.
A takeover before the big show
Three months before Brussels welcomes Olympic medallists and the global BMX Freestyle elite, this TAKEOVER BMX event aims to bring the sport back to street level. Instead of waiting for a big international competition in September, Urban Sessions turns key public spaces into open, free‑access playgrounds for basketball, skate and BMX.
For BMX, that playground is Tour & Taxis, where the skatepark becomes a day‑long hub for riders, friends and curious newcomers. The organisers are clear about their goal: supporting young riders who are pushing the scene forward in Brussels, giving them visibility, gear and a sense that this city is also theirs to ride.

A full day on two wheels
The programme is built to welcome both complete beginners and more experienced riders:
- 11:00 – 15:00 | BMX initiations
Ideal if you’ve never set foot on a BMX before, or if you want to build confidence on the bike in a guided, low‑pressure setting. - 15:00 – 15:30 | Prep for Jam
Warm‑up time before the contests start, to feel the park, test lines and adjust to the energy of the day. - 15:30 – 19:00 | Best Trick & Jam Session -15
Younger riders take over, with tricks, attempts, falls and small victories all afternoon. - 15:30 – 19:00 | Best Trick & Jam Session +15
More experienced riders bring style, creativity and big tricks, with BMX parts, accessories and surprises for those who bring the most energy and flair.
All day long, food, drinks, music and good vibes are on the menu – making the event feel as much like a block party as a competition.
Why it matters for Brussels communities
Urban sports and everyday city life have more in common than it might seem. Both are about reclaiming space, building community and inventing your own rules in environments that were not always designed for you. For many people who did not feel at home in traditional sports, events like this can offer:
- A way to inhabit the city differently, beyond shopping streets or nightlife
- A chance to see diverse bodies and styles on a skatepark, not just one “type” of rider
- A place to try something new without being judged for not being “good enough” yet
If you grew up feeling clumsy in PE classes, or never saw yourself reflected in mainstream sports, a BMX initiation in a mixed, open setting can be surprisingly liberating. Watching a jam session where style and creativity count as much as perfection also opens up another way of relating to movement and performance.

The bigger picture: Brussels Urban Sessions
This BMX day is part of a broader TAKEOVER series leading up to Brussels Urban Sessions in September at Parc du Cinquantenaire. The calendar includes:
- 30 May — Place du Congrès: 3×3 Basketball
- 13 June — Tour & Taxis: BMX Freestyle
- 4 July — Place des Ursulines: Skateboarding
The main festival, from 11 to 13 September, offers two options: a free festival ticket giving access to sports, activities, music, food and drinks, or an upgraded BMX Freestyle ticket with the best seats to see the world’s top riders defy gravity in Brussels. It’s another step in making urban sports part of the city’s cultural life, not just occasional events on the margins.
