Julia M. Free’s upcoming VRT-Canvas docu-series, GAY & GREY, aims to shine a long-overdue light on the lives of elderly lesbian couples.

But where are the elderly lesbian couples in Brussels? That’s the question queer filmmaker Julia M. Free is asking, as she currently develops her debut docu-series, GAY & GREY — a tribute to the long lasting love, resilience, and legacy of women who love women.
GAY & GREY is a love story. It portrays elderly lesbian couples aged 70 and above, women who helped pave the way for lesbian visibility in Belgium and beyond — yet often remained invisible themselves. Which makes finding these couples not that easy.

The goal? Julia’s mission is clear and urgent: “At its heart, the series is a celebration of enduring love — the kind that survives decades, societal shifts, and above all, the choice for each other. But I cannot overlook the history of lesbian women’s invisibility. Not only because they were women, but because they loved women.”

Are you a lesbian couple aged 70 or above living in/around Brussels? – Julia would love to connect. Let’s honour our lesbian elders and let’s make sure these stories aren’t lost. Reach out to Julia at info@gayandgrey.org and be part of making their legacies visible.
