Cleopatra Superstar: Two Millennia Later, Still the Ultimate Icon

Was she a political genius or a seductive queen? A savvy ruler or a misunderstood femme fatale? More than 2,000 years after her reign, Cleopatra remains one of history’s most fascinating figures — and one of pop culture’s most enduring muses. Now, a new large-scale exhibition in Liège dives deep into her myth, her power, and her timeless influence.

From December 20, 2025, to July 5, 2026Cleopatra Superstar takes over the Liège-Guillemins Exhibition Space with a spectacular and immersive journey through ancient Egypt, Rome, and the modern imagination. Produced by Collections & Patrimoines, and presented by Europa Expo and the Royal Museum of Mariemont, the exhibition offers queer visitors and allies alike a chance to rediscover this larger-than-life superstar through history, art, and pop culture.

More Than a Queen — A Legend

Spanning over 2,000 square meters, Cleopatra Superstar brings together more than 120 major pieces, including 65 archaeological treasures from world-class institutions such as the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (Leiden), and the Museum of Fine Arts of Marseille. These historic objects share the stage with 80 iconic artworks and paintings, offering an unprecedented dialogue between ancient representations and modern reinventions.

The exhibition takes visitors from Cleopatra’s rise to power and political alliances to her reinvention in film, music, advertising, and even video games — proving that she’s not just a chapter in history books, but an ever-relevant symbol of strength, style, and seduction.

From Ancient Power to Pop Culture Icon

In the second half of the experience, visitors step straight into Cleopatra’s afterlife in pop culture — where Liz Taylor’s glamour meets Beyoncé’s golden aesthetics. Music videos, movie clips, and digital art installations bring to life the enduring question: What does Cleopatra represent today? For queer audiences, she’s more than just a diva — she’s the blueprint of self-expression, reinvention, and unapologetic power.

A Scholarly and Sensual Adventure

Curated under the scientific direction of Claire Mercier, the exhibition draws on the expertise of renowned historians including François de CallataÿNicolas Amoroso, and Dimitri Laboury. Together, they offer a rich, vibrant exploration that bridges academic knowledge and creative passion — accessible, interactive, and designed for visitors of all ages.
