In a shocking move, lawmakers in North Dakota are calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to undo same-sex marriage rights. A newly passed resolution demands the court overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 ruling that guaranteed marriage equality across all 50 states.
The Republican-led push calls the ruling an “illegitimate overreach” and insists marriage should only exist between a “biological male and female”. If successful, this could open the door for states to re-ban equal marriage, stripping LGBTQ+ couples of legal rights and protections.

“Same-sex couples can have a union, but don’t call it marriage,” argued Bill Tveit, the resolution’s sponsor. Democrat Austin Foss fired back, stunned to be fighting for his right to stay married in 2025.
For many, this is more than a legal debate—it’s a threat to fundamental rights. One local resident reminded lawmakers that marriage equality isn’t just symbolic: “My queer friends and family deserve the same legal protections as everyone else.”
At KET.brussels, we stand in solidarity with the U.S. LGBTQ+ community. This move is a reminder that equality can never be taken for granted. Now, all eyes are on the North Dakota Senate.
