From June 15 to July 15, Brussels becomes home to a bold, beautiful experiment in queer time and space. Taking over the former MIMA building in Molenbeek, the Pride Museum unveils “What About Queer?”, a month-long takeover that defies the idea of what a museum is — or should be.
More than a static exhibition, this living installation unfolds like a queer memory: layered, fluid, contradictory, and defiantly alive. “We didn’t want a traditional museum experience,” explains one of the curators. “This is about process, not perfection — about queerness as something you do, not just something you look at.”
Expect performances that bloom unannounced, workshops shaped by community needs, and gatherings where joy and grief share space. “Queer space isn’t just a place — it’s an interruption,” adds the team, citing theorist Jack Halberstam. “We’re here to disrupt, to reimagine.”
Set in one of the city’s most culturally rich neighborhoods, What About Queer? embraces its Molenbeek location not as a backdrop, but as a partner. Intersectionality isn’t a buzzword here — it’s woven into the very fabric of the project. Local collectives, queer artists, and activist voices are not just featured but empowered to lead.
The Pride Museum’s long-term ambition is to establish a permanent queer cultural space in Brussels — but this first edition is already making waves. With support from JAM Hotel, the initiative affirms that queer futures can be imagined not only in defiance, but also in tenderness, collaboration, and care.
In a time when the language of gender and identity is being policed, silenced, or distorted, What About Queer? doesn’t just ask a question — it offers a collective answer. One that is personal and political, ephemeral and lasting, joyful and deeply necessary.
