In 2023, the City of Brussels is gearing up to commemorate a significant milestone: the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking law legalizing same-sex marriage in Belgium. To ensure this momentous occasion is etched in the annals of history, the City’s Museums and Archives have launched an inspiring initiative. They are calling upon the community to contribute LGBTQIA+ archives centered around the theme of marriage. This noble undertaking aims to preserve the rich heritage of the LGBTQIA+ movement while shedding light on the transformative power of love and equality.
The Archives of the City of Brussels will leave no stone unturned in their quest to capture the essence of same-sex marriage through a diverse range of materials, including photographs, letters, diaries, articles, memorabilia, and more. These invaluable pieces of history will help create a comprehensive narrative, showcasing the struggles, triumphs, and stories of love that have shaped the LGBTQIA+ community’s journey towards equal rights.
To spread the word far and wide, the Archives will be distributing eye-catching flyers during Pride Week events and launching an impactful poster campaign across community venues in Brussels and the city center. The aim is to engage individuals who have firsthand experiences or possess significant LGBTQIA+ archival materials, encouraging them to play an essential role in safeguarding and sharing their history.
Married couples can contribute to the LGBTQIA+ Archives.
Donors are warmly invited to schedule an appointment at the Archives, conveniently located on rue des Tanneurs, to contribute their valuable LGBTQIA+ archives. Each item holds a unique tale, a piece of a larger puzzle that completes the narrative of the struggle for marriage equality and LGBTQIA+ rights. By donating these precious artifacts, you become a part of this historic endeavor, ensuring that the voices and stories of the LGBTQIA+ community are celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
This call for donations of LGBTQIA+ archives on same-sex marriage is an opportunity for all to contribute to an inclusive historical record. Whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, an ally, or simply passionate about promoting equality and understanding, your support is critical. Together, let us honor the milestones achieved, empower future generations, and foster a society that values and embraces love in all its forms.
