The Belgian-Dutch co-production Young Hearts, directed by Anthony Schatteman, has garnered significant acclaim on the international film circuit. Young Hearts premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2024, where it received a Special Mention in the Generation Kplus section. The film continued its successful run by winning the Iris Prize for Best Feature Film, with lead actor Lou Goossens earning the Best Performance in a Male Role award. Additionally, Goossens was honored with the Outstanding Performance award at Toronto’s Inside Out Film and Video Festival.
Anthony Schatteman, a graduate of the KASK School of Arts in Ghent with a master’s degree in Film Studies and Visual Culture from the University of Antwerp, is known for exploring the lives of young people and their relationships. His work often focuses on themes of burgeoning sexuality and homoeroticism, characterized by a stylized approach, minimal dialogue, and a deep attention to complex emotions. His earlier short films, such as Kiss Me Softly, Follow Me, Petit Ami, and Hello, Stranger, have been celebrated at international film festivals.
Brussels audiences will have the opportunity to experience Young Hearts during its avant-premiere at Cinema Palace on December 12, 2024, at 19:00. This screening is part of the “Be Curious” series, which showcases unreleased or heritage titles by Belgian filmmakers. The event will feature a discussion with Anthony Schatteman, offering insights into the film’s creation and themes.
Young Hearts is set for general release in Belgium on December 18, 2024. Its exploration of young love and self-acceptance, combined with Schatteman’s sensitive direction, makes it a must-see for cinema enthusiasts.
