Zoe Saldaña continues to shine, both on screen and off. On Sunday, February 17, the Guardians of the Galaxy star took home the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Perez, further cementing her status as a powerhouse performer.

But beyond the accolades, it’s her words that resonate most. In her acceptance speech, Saldaña dedicated her awards—and the film itself—to her nephew Eli, proudly stating: “As the proud aunt of a trans life, I will always stand with trans people.”
Her role in Netflix’s musical crime drama has already earned her a Golden Globe and the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. With an Academy Award nomination also in the mix, this could be just the beginning of a groundbreaking awards season for Saldaña.
More than just an actress, Saldaña has long been an LGBTQIA+ ally. In a previous interview, she reflected on how starring alongside Britney Spears in Crossroads gave her “special credit in the gay community.”
