Every year, ILGA-Europe releases its Annual Review, assessing the state of LGBTQIA+ rights across the continent. This year’s report paints a deeply alarming picture: rising hostility, legislative backsliding, and a growing normalization of anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric.
Escalating Discrimination – From healthcare to education and housing, LGBTQIA+ people across Europe are facing increasing barriers. Several governments are pushing so-called “traditional values” narratives to justify discriminatory policies, limiting access to fundamental rights.
LGBTQIA+ Asylum Seekers Left in the Cold – Even in countries like Belgium, LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers continue to face inadequate support, unjust asylum procedures, and outright rejection based on harmful stereotypes. Many are forced into precarious or dangerous situations, despite fleeing extreme violence and persecution in their home countries.
Rising Hate Speech and Violence – The report highlights a disturbing increase in hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ individuals, often fueled by politicians and state-backed narratives. Anti-“LGBT propaganda” laws are spreading, censoring education and restricting access to resources, while some governments are openly cracking down on LGBTQIA+ activism. Fake dating profiles are being used to lure LGBTQIA+ people into violent ambushes, and in some countries, authorities are actively entrapping and persecuting LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Yet, despite the threats, the LGBTQIA+ community is fighting back. Pride marches are growing in number, even in hostile regions. Legal victories have been achieved in some countries, proving that change is still possible.
ILGA-Europe’s work is more crucial than ever, and KET.brussels is standing by its side to spread the word and amplify the call to action. LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack, and we cannot afford to stay silent.
Share, speak up, and get involved. The fight for equality is far from over!
